Desferal 0.5gm Injection is a prescription medication used to treat chronic iron overload in the body. This condition often happens to patients who get a lot of blood transfusions, such as people with thalassemia. It is also used to treat acute iron poisoning and aluminum overload. [1]

The generic name for Desferal is deferoxamine mesylate. It belongs to a group of medicines called heavy metal antagonists or chelating agents. It works by binding to excess iron or aluminum in the bloodstream and tissues. Once bound, the body can easily flush the metals out through urine and stool. [2, 3, 4]

This medicine comes as a powder in a vial and must be dissolved before use. It is usually given in three ways: [5, 6]

• Subcutaneous Infusion (Under the Skin): Slowly pumped under the skin over 8 to 12 hours using a small portable pump.
• Intramuscular Injection (IM): Given as a shot into a large muscle.
• Intravenous Infusion (IV): Given directly into a vein, usually at a slow rate during a hospital visit. [2, 7, 8, 9]

You might experience some side effects while using this medicine. Contact your healthcare provider if they bother you:

• Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
• Nausea or upset stomach
• Fever or headache
• Muscle or joint aches
• Reddish-colored urine (this is harmless and shows the drug is removing iron) [10, 11, 12, 13]

• Vision and Hearing Checks: Long-term use can affect your eyes and ears. You should get eye and hearing exams regularly.
• Infection Risk: This medicine can make you more prone to certain bacterial infections. Tell your doctor if you get a sudden fever.
• Pregnancy: Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant before using this drug. [14]
